  • It’s ballet flat season once again, so it’s time to break out those chic little shoes.While Audrey Hepburn may have walked around effortlessly in a pair, for many of us, these barely-there looks aren’t always the most comfortable option around.But don’t think you need to cross them off your spring footwear list entirely. Comfort brands have stepped in with on-trend options that include enhanced comfort features such as super-soft Fitflops Sale uppers and cushioned footbeds.Let’s start from the top. Think about all those times ballet flats have rubbed against your skin, causing blisters that required a box of Band-Aids to make it through the day. Today, brands are increasingly addressing this issue with styles made from glove-like leathers that are gentle on skin.Take Cole Haan’s Tali Bow ballet flat from the Birkenstock Shoes Grand.OS collection: Its leather is lined, and the shoe features a padded leather footbed and lightweight rubber outsole. Meanwhile, Aerosoles Teashop ballet style is designed with its signature Stitch N Turn technology for flexibility, and adds a memory-foam footbed.While the season’s wave of ballet flats make comfort the priority, that doesn’t mean style has been put on the back burner. Birkenstock Ecco’s Shape Tassel Ballerina version has a modern tapered toe, while adding a fun pom-pom to the vamp. Or try FitFlop’s Adoraballerina, an athletic-inspired version that works with today’s offering of yoga pants or capris.
    ATLANTA — When it came to writing orders, retailers at The Atlanta Shoe Market were performing a balancing act for fall ’13.Industry insiders who attended Birkenstock Store the trade show, which ran Feb. 23-25 at the city’s Cobb Galleria Centre and Renaissance Waverly Hotel, said the season’s buy was a challenge given that consumers are expected to stay in their fashion comfort zones for fall.“Retailers [are sticking with familiar looks and labels] because they know what works,” said the show’s executive director, Laura Conwell-O’Brien. “But [shoppers] still Mbt Shoes need to see fresh new product.     Italian fashion-comfort brand Pomme D’Or makes its U.S. debut this spring, distributed through Wakefield, Mass.-based Cordani. Included in the contemporary collection are sachetto construction ballet flats, pumps and wedges, Birkenstock Sale all incorporating cushioned footbeds. Retailing from $325 to $600, the line is slated for February delivery at department stores and independents.Swiss wellness brand Swissies is set to launch its men’s and women’s lines in the U.S. for spring ’13. (The label previously debuted its children’s collection here for spring ’12.) Founded by Michael Garzon, a former principal and partner of Mbt Sandals MBT, the series of casuals, sandals and athletic-inspired looks is built around a proprietary sole technology. Cushioned insoles and midsoles are layered over lightweight unit bottoms that have a gently rounded silhouette to promote a natural gait. Also in the spring ’13 collection are new dress styles for men and women featuring refined leather outsoles. Targeted to better independents and Birkenstock Sandals department stores, the brand will deliver in February with retail prices of $55 to $70 for children’s; $115 to $160 for women’s (above); and $120 to $275 for men’s.The comfort market gets Fitflops Clearance a bit greener this spring with the launch of Plano, Texas-based iEpic, a collection of eco-friendly fabric looks. Founder Kate Lan, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate with a background in logistics management, said she took a simple approach to design, which inspired the brand’s name: the I is for “iconic,” while Epic means “monumental.” The men’s and women’s casuals and athletic-inspired styles feature uppers and cushioned footbeds made of cotton. The fabric aims to keep feet cool and dry even when the shoes are worn sockless. All outsoles are Mbts crafted using a blend of cotton and other fibers for added durability. Targeted to independents, department stores and catalogs, the line delivers in January. Retail prices range from $25 to $60.Cri de Coeur is going for gold — without the gold. The vegan footwear label collaborated with jewelry designer Andy Lifschutz to create a sustainable jewelry collection from recycled metals, Birkenstock Outlet reclaimed bronze and ethically sourced black onyx. The made-in-New York jewelry will hit retail in October. Price points range from $70 to $336. “We are planning to take the term eco-friendly and sustainable jewelry to the next level with this collaboration,” said Cri de Coeur co-founder and designer Julie Dicterow. “We wanted to create a collection that is handmade locally Fitflop Sandals but [has] a luxurious feel.”
